Mike's Tavern

Image
Mike's Tavern is located at 5211 HWY 153 in Hixson behind California Tortilla and across the street from Smoothie King. We were immediately greeted by the hostess and seated. The waitress wasn't too far behind getting our drink order. For our appetizer, we ordered the Ahi Tuna over a bed of wasabi slaw. The tuna was so tender and so fresh it tasted like steak. Fish is slowly growing on me, guys. For entrees, I ordered Shrimp and Grits. Blackened jumbo shrimp served over pepper jack grits and finished with andouille cream sauce. The grits were so creamy it melted in your mouth and the shrimp had excellent flavor and wasn't too spicy. My fiance ordered the Grouper sandwich with Southern Slaw as the side. The sandwich had great flavor and is the best in town. The slaw has the perfect balance of vinegar and mayo. It's almost dry but, that's not a bad thing since you can actually taste everything. For dessert, we ordered the apple cinnamon bread pudding. It ...

Melodee's Diner

Image
Melodee's Diner is a new Americana style restaurant located in the old Family Table restaurant. Everything here is made from scratch and has the best country cooking you will eat outside of your Mamaw's kitchen! We ordered the Pimento Cheese Sliders for appetizer. Now, my fiancée isn't a fan of pimento cheese at all and he even liked these! You can tell its homemade and they are on rolls rather than the regular buns and that's what makes them unique and tastes a lot better than others. The vegetables on the Chef Salad are fresh and crisp and there was a perfect balance of veggies and lettuce and there was plenty of meat, but, not too much. You might have to order extra dressing if you like a lot. Guys, this salad is better than the one at Newk's, don't get me wrong, that have a great salad but, this one surpasses that one! My fiancée ordered the Open Face Roast Beef, it was so tender it melted in your mouth! The mashed potatoes on the bottom were the best a...

Cafe on the Corner

Image
Cafe on the Corner is a restaurant located atop of scenic Lookout Mountain. If you haven't been there before it can be easy to miss (I drove right past it). If you pass the post office you've gone too far and even that's easy to miss. It is a perfect spot for a romantic date, they have a fireplace and candles on the tables that set the mood, you can also have your birthday party, rehearsal dinner, meetings, etc. For appetizer, we ordered the Fried Green Tomatoes. These are some of the best we have had! They were crunchy on the outside and not too mushy or hard on the inside. There was no need for the sauce but, the other toppings made it taste good. For entrée, I ordered the shrimp and grits. The grits were creamy and had a coconut taste to them. Together with the sauce it had a great flavor! The shrimp was cooked perfect and had the flavor of the sauce. My fiancée ordered the Cafe Mac. This is grilled chicken, Benton's bacon, smoked gouda, cheddar, and jack cheese...

Newk's gives new meaning to fresh food

Image
Tired of searching for a place to eat that pleases everyone in the family? Have picky kids? We've found the perfect place! Newk's Eatery is located off of Shallowford Road behind Embassy Suites/Ruth's Chris. You are greeted immediately when you walk in and everyone is friendly and very helpful. They have a condiment bar for all your salad and sandwich needs. The kitchen is open with a counter and chairs so that you can sit and watch your food being made. We ordered one of everything on the menu except for dessert since we were too full after all that food. We ordered the Ultimate Salad. It has sliced flame-grilled chicken breast, diced smoked ham, diced oven-roasted turkey, mixed greens, grape tomatoes, cucumbers, aged cheddar cheese, house made croutons and made from scratch honey mustard dressing. Everything is tossed together then put in a bowl. This salad was the best that I've had in a long time! It's fresh, light and clean tasting. It will be perfect on a hot,...

Aubrey's-Hixson

I have to start out by saying that The Chattanooga Times Free Press tends to hype up new restaurants in the area. They order one entrée and only that. We order multiple things so you will know what items on the menu are good and which ones aren't. What we observed was that there were a lot of older people in the restaurant and I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but, it does explain a lot about how they cook their food. Hardly anything is seasoned properly and therefore tastes plain. We decided for appetizers, or small plates, we would get the crab cakes, notice the s on the end of that. We were very disappointed to find that it was only one crab cake for $10! Really?! And I know what some of you are thinking, "Well, if it was $10 it had to be HUGE and the best you've had, right? Wrong! It was just your normal tasting crab cake and it was moist, I mean, don't get me wrong, it was good, just not what we were expecting for $10. We also ordered the Pizza Rockefe...

Drake's

Image
Chattanooga's newest bar restaurant is located in front of the new Publix off of Shallowford Road Please note that if you go after 10 on Saturday night that there is a dress code. I read it on the back of the sign that says to seat yourself as we were leaving but, I didn't catch what the whole dress code was and after looking on the website I couldn't find it. Now, as I mentioned before, its a seat yourself. It was the second day after opening that we went and they are obviously still working out the kinks. We are not a big fan of restaurants that have the sign that says "please seat yourself", to us it just seems impersonal. All the servers seemed to be walking around getting everyone's drinks, which is fine, but, it just didn't seem organized. Now, I know you may think that I am complaining a lot and none of this so far has anything to do with food but, I figured I would go all out since this is a new restaurant. For appetizer, we ordered the BLT Tots. ...

The Feed Table and Tavern

Image
It was a rainy Monday and if you know downtown well, you know a lot of restaurants are closed on Mondays and our choices were slim. We kept walking and stumbled upon a restaurant called The Feed, located across the street from Clyde's On Main. This is a made from scratch and that is something that we strive to find. For Appetizer, we ordered the Triple B Fries. They are different, in a good way, beer battered with crispy bacon. If you like beer cheese this is definitely for you! The beer taste isn't as strong to me as others I have tried. The bacon needs to be either more salty or smokier to go with the beer cheese though. Next,we ordered the Sloppy Joe. The bread is soft and the meat is tender. It makes you feel like a kid again, its not too greasy and not too tomato-y. I have come to dislike the typical sloppy joe or "Manwich" due to the fact that it is too tomato-y but, I could seriously eat this every day! For the side we got cole slaw. It had the perfect balan...
