Aubrey's-Hixson
I have to start out by saying that The Chattanooga Times Free Press tends to hype up new restaurants in the area. They order one entrée and only that. We order multiple things so you will know what items on the menu are good and which ones aren't. What we observed was that there were a lot of older people in the restaurant and I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but, it does explain a lot about how they cook their food. Hardly anything is seasoned properly and therefore tastes plain. We decided for appetizers, or small plates, we would get the crab cakes, notice the s on the end of that. We were very disappointed to find that it was only one crab cake for $10! Really?! And I know what some of you are thinking, "Well, if it was $10 it had to be HUGE and the best you've had, right? Wrong! It was just your normal tasting crab cake and it was moist, I mean, don't get me wrong, it was good, just not what we were expecting for $10.
We also ordered the Pizza Rockefeller. It has good flavor. Its basically a fancier version of Taco Bell's Mexican Pizza except it has spinach, chicken and jalapenos. It tastes exactly like it and you are better off going to Taco Bell and paying their price than paying $8-$10 for this.
The best thing on the menu that we had was sadly an appetizer, the fillet bites. Obviously, fillet cut in small pieces with potato dumplings, asparagus tips, baby arugula, mushrooms, and a Madiera wine sauce. The dumplings and fillet were cooked perfectly and everything paired well. The fillet was tender and just melted in your mouth. For entrees, we ordered the Buttermilk Fried Chicken. A double breast, double battered in buttermilk and covered in homemade white gravy. The chicken isn't seasoned at all, no seasoning in the batter either. The batter was kind of doughy. It comes with a side of your choice and so it was the Thick Cut Potato Chips for our choice. Nice in size, nice golden color, but sadly again, almost plain. I ordered the Rattlesnake Pasta. Grilled chicken, sautéed baby spinach, green peppers, linguine, southwestern spiced alfredo sauce, and garnished with cilantro. The sauce was a little heavy as it fell to the bottom of the bowl. It did have good flavor though. Next is the Old Fashioned Patty Melt. You can't mess this up, right? Well, in this case, you apparently can. I was very disappointed in it. We asked for medium and it came out well done, in fact, it was so dry that the bread didn't soak up any juices at all from the meat. The menu said bacon, we had to search for the bacon and found bacon BITS! The burger came with only cheese, sautéed onions and bacon bits. The Texas toast was a bit too thick for the burger, it took more than one bite to get to the meat. For the side we decided on the Smashed New Potatoes. The potatoes were boiled in water and just smashed and put in the dish. No milk, butter, salt, or pepper was added. These were just plain potatoes. I ended up taking the burger and potatoes home and the next day the burger was so dry that I couldn't eat them. Butter and cheese couldn't help them either. The potatoes look a lot like eggs in the picture which just looks unappetizing. Sad to say that I was super excited about this restaurant only to be let down. We will not be back due to the fact that it made my fiancée sick.
