The Great American Filling Station -The best "Mom and Pop" Americana Restaurant in Chattanooga
Walking in to the restaurant brought back childhood memories as I used to go in the Golden Gallon gas station that used to be where the restaurant currently occupies. Located across from Publix on East Brainerd Road. There's evidence that it used to be a gas station as there are the gas pump handles are on the wall and as handles on the restroom doors, which are super clean. Although, they are clean enough to eat off the floor, I still wouldn't reccomend it as it's a restroom(no offense).
The Great American Filling Station is a down to home restaurant, a comfort place that is family oriented. There are no freezers and rverything is homemade. For appetizers, we got the Bull Bites. They are very tender and juicy pieces of steak that melt in your mouth.
Next, we ordered the Tennessee Bacon Cheese Fries. Guys, the fries are out of this world!!! They are handcut and you don't even need any ketchup on them! They taste so fresh and they aren't greasy. The cheese sauce isn't just melted velveeta, no, this is homemade cheese sauce and the bacon isn't the "fake" stuff that you get at the store. The jalapeno ranch that comes with the fries has just the right amount of spice. The fries, by the way, taste like a much better version of Checkers.
For entrees, I ordered the Pimento Cheese Burger. The pimento cheese is creamy and has a little kick to it. The burgers are juicy and they hand pat them. You dress your burger the way you want at their burger bar, which is very impressively clean! I'm talking spotless(as with the rest of the place)! They even have everything labeled by date for freshness. Now, the burgers come with fries but, since we ordered them for appetizers, I opted to substitute them for the mac and cheese. It's creamy and it's doesn't have that chalky, boxed taste. The best homemade mac n cheese in town! Picture shown is how they bring it out and as I said earlier, you dress it however you like.
My fiancee ordered the Philly. Ya'll he is super picky about these sandwiches and this is hands down the best one he's had! It wasn't greasy so, it didn't make the bread soggy everything was cooked perfectly.
He also ordered the Open Face Chili Cheese Burger. The chili is awesome and is even better with the burger. The chili has a nice flavor and has just the right amount of spice.
Now, at this point we weren't going to have dessert. But, when we heard they just made their very first batch of bread pudding ever we just couldn't resist. That is one of our favorite desserts. It's creamy, the texture is nice, but, the icing didn't have enough bourbon in it.
Next, we tried the Flourless Chocolate Torte. It is served with fresh berries of your choice. It is fudgy and eating everything together cuts the bitterness of the chocolate.
As you can see an American flag comes on every plate. The owner has a soft spot for the military men and woman and all military get a discount. They have coins that are on the bar and it costs $1 to guess how much is there. If you guess the correct amount you could win either a $100 gift card or a year of free appetizers. And hey, if you don't win you are still winning because that $1 goes to help local homeless vets. We will most definitely be back and highly recommend!
